Some years ago a drunken Indian came to the house who said he could make 200 pairs of moccasins in one day. He said that our Lord had left word that moccasins would always be wanted, "yes moccasins and baskets, cos when you wear 'em out one pair, mus' have nother one. Them very good word."

He explained who he was by saying that Sebattis Dana's wife was his mother; his wife was Maria Saukees' daughter and Steve Stanislaus was his father-in-law, a charmingly impossible combination.

He had been hunting all the fall; had caught 400 Otter, 175 Mink. Said also "You see my wife he pick me out all Oldtown Injuns coz me was bes' lookin one an' coz me speak berry good Inglis.

Natamis, Natanes - A family of that name in Gen. Blake's Roster Lewis Ketchum says that Sol Neptune (Gov. John's son) married a Notamis; that Frank Sock m. Betsy Notamis, who was Old Betsy, the terror of our childhood. Frank Sock was killed in the war. Clara says Notamis means "snotty nose". It was the Notamis crew, not the Neptunes who had the high noses.

Socktahlen - Lewey used to hear the name long ago. I think it is "Socks Island" & that Sock [underlined] was the name [underlined]
