Indian Lives and Anecdotes ca. 1886 - 1941 part 11 (ms158_b3f003_011.04.pdf)

[No strikethrough:]

Caughnewahge [? Kahnawake] -

Geo. H. Hunt says (1917) that he "never heard any of them ever say they ever went to Caughnewahge."

Clara Neptune declares that they go every year still. That Newel Francis went last year [three underlined], Old Saul Neptune, Joe Necola, Gov Aittean, Gov. Soccabesin Swasin, all went to the "K'tchi Scookagnah" [?] or big council. (This is more than doubtful [three underlined]) "If he trouble ever Penobscot Indians, then he help him."

1917

Lewey says that when he was a young man, but of voting age, Attean Orson tried to get 5$ of him and others; said they owed it to him Finally it appeared that it had been voted for each one to pay 5$ to defray expenses of delegates to Caughnewahge. Lewey said he would pay his to get rid of the old man, but he laughed at there being any necessity of it. Said it started the breaking up of the custom. Says he believed he knew of Sebattis Mitchel going to Caughnewahge in the 70ties

{If Lewey was of voting age then this must have been in 1855 - for he was two years younger than father.} Voting age with Indians was 18 years - Lewey born 1834 = 1852 or later
