Investigation of the Committee of the Legislature of 1881 Concerning the Management of the Maine Insane Hospital Part 2 (14-354688-F021-I001-P1246.pdf)

1246 By Mr. Hall Q. You never saw the lodge room when it was cold enough for a man to suffer? A. No sir. Q. You never saw Palmer put in there without clothes; you do not say you never saw him in there naked? A. I never saw him in there entirely naked, never saw him without some piece of blanket or shirt. Q. Do you mean to say that you never saw the lodge cold enough to be uncomfortable for a man without clothes? A. I never saw it cold enough for Palmer to complain of the cold, I used to ask him. Q. What temperature would you need to keep in those lodges in order for Palmer without anymore clothes than you now speak of to be comfortable? A. I should think from 50 to 60 in the condition he was in. I do not think he would feel the cold like in sane man. Q. You never saw his teeth chatter. A. No sir Q. Ever see him in this bag of straw? A. I do not remember ever seeing him in a bag
