Correspondence from Charles E. Banks to Fannie Hardy Eckstorm ca. 1915-1930, part 7 (ms158_b1f005_007.4.pdf)

mostly by clergymen and cobblers. One type of word I think is rather distinctive of Maine - the terminal -iggin, -oggin, egan, Sebascodiggin, Androscoggin, Eggemoggin, forms of ending that I do not quite understand, unless the so-called "euphonic" element is here found[?] to make the words sound pleasing! This brings me to salutation "How" - as preparatory to a libation - and I think I will go to the Club and be a good Indian for a while over a bit of liquid refreshment.

Very truly CF Banks
