A committee consisting of Messrs. Clifford of Newfield, Kent of Bangor, Cilley of Thomaston, Phelps of Fairfield and Swett of Prospect was appointed to receive sort and count the votes for a Clerk, and on counting the same it appeared that the whole number of votes given in was one hundred and sixty eight - necessary for a choice eighty five - Joseph G. Cole had one hundred and seventeen - Richard H. Vose had forty one - scattering ten and Joseph G. Cole was declared elected and being present, took and subscribed the oath of office which was administered to him by Ruel Williams Esq a magistrate for the County of Kennebec, as follows,
I, Joseph G. Cole do solemnly swear that I will faithfully discharge to the best of my abilities the duties incumbent on me as a clerk of the House of Representatives of the State of Maine - So help me God.

The clerk having been duly qualified, presided during the further organization of the House.

A committee consisting of Messrs. Knowlton of Montville, Dummer of Hallowell, Bailey of Parsonsfield, Hamlin of Columbia and Smith of Gray was appointed to receive sort and count the votes for a Speaker - and on counting the same it appeared that the whole number given in was one hundred and seventy three - necessary to a choice eighty seven  - Benjamin White had one hundred and eighteen - Edward Kent had forty seven - William Clark five - Jeremiah O'Brien one - Ebenezer L. Phelps one - Nathan Clifford one  - and Benjamin White of Monmouth was declared elected.

Mr. Williams of Augusta was charged with a message to the Senate informing them of the organization of the House by the election of Benjamin White Speaker and Joseph G. Cole Clerk.
