Our folks took the 23rd georgia [Georgia] regiment. they wer captured up the river. Three Companys and the Colonel escaped before they were made fast. The rebs were marched passed us and complained of being dreadfull hungary and we opened our haver-sack to them and they said they would remember us if they ever got us in a hard place.

4th Sharp firing about 7 o clock AM. Canonading steady thru the day. The rebs came in on the heights licking the 6th Corps near night and drove them back to the river and out of thair communic-ation with the city which left them cut off from our lines unless by crossing the river without a bridge. The 6th ME regt wer in that corps and a grate many of them swam the river and got out the best they could. Stuarts cavelry reported across the river.
