102 Poplar Grove Church

We drove in thair pickets then charged thair main line taking some prisoners two canons, two caisons and driving the rest pell mell acrost the field and threw a piece of woods and away out of sight. We then stopped and formed our line and the 9th corps formed in front of us and we were relieved. We lay still a few hours, then the rebs came down on the 9th corps and drove them pell mell back across the field. Our division was put into the field on the right of the 9th corps to protect thair flank. About sunset the 9th had fell back so that the rebs came down threw the woods onto us. They came to the edge of the woods and we were lying in the field about five rods from them but they being below us they fired over us most of the time. They wer bound to drive us but we were frozen down and would not move. We lay here and fought as hard as ever any one could and done all any one could ask. The regt did not lose many in this place.
