I send the mothers papers for the $5.13 due Warren J. Devereux, late private Co. B 2 Me Regt, he died in prison at Richmond [Jan?] 4/62 Mrs D. has rec'd the pay and Bounty Though Bro Abbot [ on]-- it is [right]. I am [not] sorry the rolls show Geo.A. Devereaux, whose papers you returned to me is not entitled to the [State] and be to Bounty thought I could not see how, by his discharge he could be ex- cluded and really now, I can not think he brings his case technically within both this letter and the shield of the law---he did pass the final ordeal was accepted and mustered into the U S service--and filled one of [ s] quota--after this he was taken sick and discharge for the season-- It was a sickness not on him when he [ ed] the service--it was a new matter--and in the same so far as his legal rights are concerned a though it had come on him two years and ten months after he [ ].
