I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a commission for myself as Colonel of the 20th Regt. and for Maj. Gilmore as Lieut. Colonel of the same. The commissions will bear date May 20th 1863, from which time there has been a vacancy in the office of Colonel, and to which time we are mustered back, by the regular mustering officer of the 5th Corps, Capt. Barnard. Our corps has been so cut off from the Main army for two months past that we have been some times three weeks without a mail and our baggage and papers have not been up with us for nearly a month. I shall lose no time in informing you of the gallant front the 20th has had in all that has been done here the moment I can get time and paper. We are now making rapid marches and expecting another big
