Certificate of Discharge.
I hereby Certify [bold], That John Erwins [handwritten] of Paris [handwritten] Maine, a Private [handwritten] of Captain David R Ripley's [handwritten] Company of Riflemen [handwritten] , in the Detachment commanded by Col. Orison Ripley [handwritten] of the drafted Militia of Maine, was born in New Gloucester [handwritten] in the State of Maine [handwritten] is aged 22 [handwritten] years, 6 [handwritten] feet and [blank] inches high, light [handwritten] complexion, black [handwritten] eyes, brown [handwritten] hair, and by profession, when called into actual service by the State of Maine for the protection of the Northeastern Frontier, a Printer [handwritten]
He was called into actual service by order of the Governor of Maine, and rendezvoused at Augusta [handwritten] Maine, on the sixth [handwritten] day of March [handwritten] A.D. 1839, being drafted from David R. Ripley's [handwritten] Company of Riflemen [handwritten] in the first [handwritten] Regiment, first [handwritten] Brigade, and sixth [handwritten] Division of the Militia of Maine, and then residing at Paris [handwritten] in said State; and having faithfully and honestly served the period required, is now entitled to honorable discharge.
The above named John Erwins [handwritten] has monthly pay due him from the sixth [handwritten] day of March[handwritten] 1839, when last paid by [stricken] to the 8th day of March 1839 [handwritten] to include this[stricken] both [inserted] days [s inserted]; and he is also entitled to pay and subsistence for travel from his residence to the place of rendezvous, and from the place of discharge to his home, being 100 [handwritten] miles, and whatever other allowances are authorized by law, to soldiers so discharged.
