The law was just as good in one case as in another, only the superintendent there was a man and acted as a man, and as a superintendent, and was capable, was able, was efficient. They used to have a female physician there before I came. She was there about a year and a half appointed almost the same day that are was appointed in Iowa at Independence. She staid [stayed] there a year and a half. Mr. Wakefield of Bangor, I think, who was a trustee and who knew her well, was the principal one concerned in getting her there. From what I could learn- and her name was repeated quite frequently both by patients and by the officers- the patients all seemed to have liked the woman, and she did her duty, and tried hard; but she could not get along.
