[page 489] compared with other hospitals? A. I dont think they vary materially in state hospitals. Q. Why I ask about the number of insane, I wish to get your idea of the two systems prevailing now, in Germany, France and America; I mean the pavilion system and the castle-like structure. Would you combine those two systems? A. This here is what is called a close hospital. The pavilion plan is where the wings are distinct from each other, and connected by a pavilion. And there is still another plan, the cottage system. If I was going to build a hospital to suit myself I should build it on the pavilion plan. Q. Do you know anything about the cottage system as now prevailing in Pennsylvania and in Illinois, a small structure built out from the main building 20 rods, accommodating perhaps 20 or 30 insane, and leaving one or two persons, or more in charge, at the expense of some $2000 each? A. I don't think it has met with great success. It has been tried at Worcester and it was given up. Q. Are there uterine and ovarian diseases
