The Committee have maturely considered the claims of these institutions upon the public patronage:

From the evidence exhibited to your committee it appears that there are at this time one hundred and seventeen students at Bowdoin College.  The number has greatly increased within the last year - and the buildings now erected are insufficient for their accommodation. Fifty seven students are under the necessity of hiring rooms in the town and of boarding in private families. This circumstance renders the education of young gentlemen expensive to their parents. The Trustees of this Institution have made a contract for the erection of a spacious and commodious edifice for the reception of students, which will cost nine thousand dollars. They possess funds applicable to this object to the amount of three thousand dollars and depend upon the munificience of the State, or a loan of money from individuals for six thousand dollars to enable them to carry this contract into effect. They have sustained great loss, to the amount of about seven thousand dollars, from the failure of several Banks in which they had taken stock
