In Fort Corocoran Va Augt 26th 1861 Head Qrs [Headquarters] 2nd Regiment Maine Vols.

Sir

Boney Shepley - of Bangor - enlisted June 29- by J.C Stevens -Laborer -21 years of age - 5 ft 11 inches high - black eyes - black hair - fair complexion and Henry H. Mayville of Bangor - enlisted July 1st by J.C Stevens - a Blacksmith - born in Baring County of Washington Maine - 20 years of age 5 foot 6 inches high - blue eyes- brown hair - fair complexion - have deserted together. They left Aug't 21st and are probably making towards Bangor. They belonged to Co. K.

This Regiment now has the duty of defending Fort Corcoran 4 companies inside 4 outside in rear - outside on the right. Men are better contented - everything looks better - good prospect of a fight they think -the descriptive roll of those last recruits is needed badly.

In haste yours truly S.W. Hoskins for Col. Roberts Commanding

Gen J.L Hodson
