Dear Sir
As I have leave of absence for a few days and time enough for the purpose, I would like permission to organize a Howitzer corps of thirty men to be attached to the 2nd Reg. Col Jameson.
There is now in the city a young man who is just the person to take command of the Corps and make it of great service to the Reg. He is perfectly familiar with the gunnery having been educated at the military school at Norwich. His name is Charles Lewis.
I will recruit and examine the men and pay room rent. advertising bills etc. myself, my sole object being to perfect the Reg. in which I take much pride.
Several of the New York Regiments have two guns but I think one will do for ours.
We can take one of those being
