+ | Also on the 1st of October the first Indian council man & two others came to me & wished me to attend a meeting at the Indian Township at Peter Danas Point to be held on the 6th to witness an election of their Governor & Lieutenant Governor & Representative, and they chose Newell Neptune Governor & Sockis Francis Lieutenant Governor & John Gaberiel for their Representative by 8 majority, but the Agent was not present & therefore they had another election on the first day of November & at that meeting Mr Davis Agent & Mr G W Smith & Pat Welch, were present, and at that meeting, I was called upon by the Indians to attend, the Indians wished to vote, by casting their Hats down upon the floor for each candidate, in Separate places, but Mr Smith distributed printed votes among the Indians & Some of them refused to take them, They not knowing how to read English, therefore Mr Gaberiel asked me to write Some for them & I wrote Some & they took them & put them into Mr Davis’s Hat as quick as they could, but before they had time to put all of them in the Hat was turned & Several votes were rejected, the Agent Saying that the polls were closed & it was to late. I calculate that about ten votes were lost – for Gaberiel but thanks to the Lord, they had votes enough to elect him, |
