+ | I have the honor to report that Professor Ganong has "come across" and three of his pamphlets took precedence of my home paper in the same mail and I spent a delightful afternoon in an armchair with his skilful analyses of Micmac place names. I think a wise man has come out of the East and at last my ideas of a systematic [word underlined] study of Indian place names in New England have been realized. The papers are sound and convincing and leave little to be desired. The only thing I would add would be a fuller reference to cognate place names in other localities of New England. This can only come from a cooperative search in the several New England states, like the work you are doing for him in Maine. I wish to be of help and have sent him my |
