I have had a great many ap-plications for staff appointments, + have taken some pains to look into their merits, and if I have any thing to say about them I would suggest the following,

Mr. A. L. Loring [underlined] of Yarmouth for Quartermaster. He makes out a strong case.

Mr. Henry I. B. Switte [underlined] of Brunswick Sergeant Major. The Governor will recollect Switte's claims.

Thomas D. Chamberlain [underlined] of Bangor
