Scammon of Pittston, Konwlton of Montville and Hobbs of Waterboro be a committee to wait on the several ordained Ministers in the town of Portland & request them to attend this House on each morning of its present session to perform the duties of Chaplain in rotation according to seniority & that it shall be the duty of the Doorkeeper to inform them on what days they will respectively be expected to attend - read & passed -

The Clerk having been duly qualified presided during the further organization of the House

A Committee consisting of Messrs. Mitchell of Portland, Robinson of Litchfield, Clark of Limington, Fiske of Fayette & Rowe of Belfast was appointed to receive, sort & count the votes for a Speaker & on counting the same it appeared that the whole number given in was One Hundred and Forty - necessary to choice Seventy one - that John Ruggles had Eighty five, Eliakim Scammon fifty two. Timothy Boutelle two, Benjamin White one - and John Ruggles of Thomaston was declared elected.

Mr Mitchell of Portland was charged with a message to the Senate informing them of the organization of the House by the election of John Ruggles Speaker & Thornton McGaw Clerk. Mr. Boutelle of Waterville was charged with a similar message to the Governor
