Monday, March 14, 1831.

[Called to order.] The President being absent, the Senate was called to order by Mr. Gardner.

[Committee appointed to receive, sort and Count the votes for President Pro tem.] On motion of Mr. Ingalls, Messrs. Davee, Sweat and Hinds were appointed a committee to receive, sort and count the votes for a President Pro tem. who having attended to the duty assigned them, reported that the whole number of votes given in was 13 Necessary to constitute a choice 7 Theodore Ingalls had 7 Syms Gardner " 5 John L. Megquier " 1 [elected] Theodore Ingalls having received a majority of all the votes given was declared duly elected and took the chair.

[Sec. Pro tem elected.] The Secretary being absent, On motion of Mr. Kingsbery, the Senate proceeded to the choice of a Secretary Pro. tem. and Virgil D. Parris was chosen, who took and subscribed the necessary oaths before Horatio Southgate, esqr. thereunto duly authorized by Dedimus Potestatem, in presence of the Senate.

[Message to the House.] Mr. Megquier was charged with a message to the House of Representatives, informing them of the above organization of the Senate.

[Report on pet. of Benjamin Dunn. & others.] Mr. Sweat from the Joint standing committee on State lands, reported leave to withdraw on the petitions of Rufus Chase, Benjamin Dunn and Charles Merrill and others, severally read and accepted. Sent down for concurrence. concurred.

[Report on an order relating Demands agt. the State.] The same gentleman from the same committee, to whom was refered an order requesting them to consider
