Wednesday ( 20th ) we embarked at Yorktown on the Steamship Merrimac, four other regiments being put on board the same vessel- The quarters of our regiment on board were uncomfortable in the extreme, the men being stowed away in bunks closely arranged between decks when there was little light or ventilation- Friday ( 22nd ) the Merrimac arrived at Alexandria and the regiment disembarked and bivouacked that night a mile or two outside the city- Saturday morning ( 23d ) we were put on board the cars of the Orange and Alexandria R.R. and taken to Warrenton Junction, where we marched the same evening to within two miles of Bealton Station; our regiment being posted in the extreme front as the advance guard of the division, and so continuing during the advance of the lines to the Rappahannock, which river we reached and picketed along its banks- sending scouts across Monday ( 25th ) -
