Washington D.C. March 10th 1864
I cheerfully give this testimonial to Mr. James H. Nichols late 1st Lieut in the 20th Regt. Maine Vols, who intends to apply for a position in the Cavalry service.
Mr. Nichols was at considerable personal expense in raising his company in the 20th Regt. and failed to receive the appointment he expected. He has shown himself an earnest and brave officer. I have often been obliged to notice his special service and gallantry.
As he has now left the Infantry service & wishes to enter the Cavalry, I cordially wish him success. On many accounts I think him peculiarly fitted for the cavalry arm, where his personal courage and enterprise would have more scope.
Justice to a brave man demands this testimonial.
J. L. Chamberlain Colonel 20th Maine Vols.
