[page 92] had also made the statement that she could not procure proper food for a sick patient; that she had gone to him and asked him for some chickens. Says Mr. Lakin, "We cannot afford to purchase chickens for Mrs. Hall." For a sick patient I had recourse to Miss Marden whose business it was to furnish food. I did procure a few strawberries etc but not all that I wanted. She did what she could Mr. Baker: Do I understand that you are testifying from your own knowledge or from what other people have told you, hear say? Dr. Neal: ^Not my own knowledge in reference to Mrs. Hall. What she said is hearsay. Mr. Baker: Then Mrs. Hall would have the best knowledge on that. Dr. Neal: I will try and keep within the limits of a witness now. Mr. Baker: Then you propose to testify in reference to things within your own knowledge, hereafter? Dr. Neal: Yes, sir. I had a talk with Dr. Oaks a short time before I left the hospital and told him there was no discipline there; that the attendants were not in their wards hardly any, but the most of the time in their rooms. The Dr. will perhaps remember it.
