Bangor, Nov 20th 1862

Dear Governor

Your last favor is just rec'd On account of disability (and for no other reason) I forwarded to Major Gardiner on the 18th inst my resignation. My physicians here tell me also Dr. Morrison that a continuance in the field during the coming winter might produce very serious results, and as active service alone suits me I have felt it my duty to take the above course. I am greatly obliged to you for the expression of confidence and good feeling you have ever manifested toward myself and [?] and in leaving the military know that you also have confidence in my successor Lt. Col. Varney and the noble little band that now comprise the Maine 2nd. It would have been pleasing to myself & friends to have rec'd a Brigadier Gen'ls appointment but a good Col. is worth more than scores of [?] Brigadiers so I will try and recruit myself and when [recruited?] if ever, and the rebellion continues, will offer myself as a candidate for two stars instead of one or else retain the birds.

Very Sincerely, I remain Your obedient Servant Chas. W. Roberts, Col. 2nd Maine

Hon. I. Washburn Jr. Augusta
