Tuesday Sept. 21 - '52 [underlined]. Rain. I was husking alone in the barn before sunrise this morning. Mr. Small joined me after breakfast, + now 2. 0'clk. P. M. the job is finished + the corn is in the Hale [?] garret. Just when we had shouldered the last basket full, John cme in to the barn + handed me your interesting sheets of 18th + 19th. inst. I thank you, my son, for your very cordial acknowledgements of filial affection which, I doubt not, are the sin-cere language of a grateful heart. I entirely appreciate some of your remarks in respect to some things that have past between us. it has been a cause of inexpressible sorrow to me that you have not seemed always to understand my motives + feelings towards you, + that you have not been uniformly respectful in your deportment towards me. But every thing of this kind most cheerfully can I not only forgive, but consider discharged in full by offset against my fits of impatience + irritability which I ought to have guarded against. it is enough for us now that we know, + feel, that there has been ever [underlined], as there is still, as strong mutual love between us as the relation of father + son is susceptible of. I had reference to no particular case in my caution about your being too confiding [underlined]; I only wished to put you on guard.
