State of Maine

To all who shall see these Presents,

Greeting:

Know ye, That William King, our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity, ability and discretion of Samuel F. Hussey of Portland, in the County of Cumberland, Moses Sleeper of Vassalborough, in the County of Kennebec, and Jackson Davis of Orono, in the County of Penobscot, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, appointed the said Samuel F. Hussey, Moses Sleeper and Jackson Davis, Agents for the Penobscot Tribe of Indians, under an Act of our Legislature, passed March the fifth, one thousand eight hundred and twenty one.

[Note in left margin next to end of previous paragraph: Moses Sleeper resigned 5 February 1823.]

We therefore do hereby authorize and empower them to fulfil [fulfill] the duties of that office according to law; and to have and to hold the same, together with all the powers, privileges and emoluments thereto of right appertaining, unto them the said Samuel F. Hussey, Moses Sleeper, and Jackson Davis, during the pleasure of our Governor and Council, for the time being.

In Testimony whereof, We have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed: Witness our governor at the Council Chamber, in Portland, the nineteenth day of March, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty one; and of the Independence of the United States the forty fifth.
