State of Maine.
To all who shall see these Presents;

Greeting:
Whereas the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in and by a Resolve of the Legislature thereof, passed the thirteenth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred & twenty three, among other things, did elect to pay to this State, the sum of Thirty thousand dollars, in lieu of the lands assigned and set off to this State, by the Commissioners under the Act of Separation, as an indemnity to the said State for the duties and obligations assumed by the same towards the Indians therein; And Whereas, in and by the same Resolve, the said sum of thirty thousand dollars is directed to be paid out of the Treasury of said Commonwealth to such Agent or Agents of this State as may be duly authorized to receive the same, in full consideration for assuming the obligations of said Commonwealth towards said Indians; and His Excellency the Governor of said Commonwealth, with the advice of Council, is requested to draw his warrant for said sum on the Treasurer thereof, conformably to the fifth section of the act for the Separation of Maine from Massachusetts in favor of said Agent or Agents: Therefore,
Be It Known, That I Albion K. Parris, governor of the State of Maine, by and with the advice and consent of the council, have appointed Elias Thomas, Esquire of Portland, the Agent of this State, to receive form the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or such other person as may be authorized to pay the same, the said sum of thirty thousand dollars, elected and directed to be paid as aforesaid. And the said Thomas is hereby authorized, in behalf of this State, to sign and execute all necessary receipts and discharges therefor.
Done at the Council Chamber, in Portland, this sixteenth day of July, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty three.
