Dear Sir -

Will you be kind enough to write to the Secretary of War in behalf of Edw'd L. Appleton for the office of Lieut. in the Regular Army! On consultation with his mother I learn she has been moving to this end, and she will be under very great obligation to you for a letter such as you suggest.

I saw that the Governor had the appointment of Regtl [regimental] officers, but was not aware of the practical modus operandi.
