To all who shall see these presents,

Greeting:

Know ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the wisdom, knowledge and integrity of James Bridge, of Augusta, in the County of Kennebec, Esquire, and, of Benjamin J. Porter of Topsham, in the County of Lincoln, I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, do by these presents appoint them, jointly, commissioners, on the part of this State, with the powers and for the purposes mentioned in the first section, of an Act of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, entitled “An Act, related to the separation of the District of Maine from Massachusetts proper, and forming the same into a separate and Independent State,” passed on the nineteenth day of June, A. D. 1819, to meet with Commissioners appointed by the Executive of said Commonwealth and invested with alike full and ample powers on the part of that Commonwealth and with them to act and divide in all matters and things falling within the powers of said Commissioners, by virtue of the law aforesaid: To have and to hold said office, severally, to each of them during the pleasure of the Governor and Council for the time being. In Testimony, whereof, I have caused these letters to be made patent, and our Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed: Given under my hand, at the Council Chamber, in Portland, the sixth day of July, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty; and of the Independence of the United States the forty fifth.
