question was decided by yeas & nays as follows - yeas 60 nays 55 [see appendix 378] Mr Bourne then moved to strike out the word "fifty six" & insert the word "eighty four" at B. and this question was decided by yeas & nays as follows - yeas 69 nays 58 [see appendix page 382] Mr Bourne then moved to strike out at C the word "fifty four" & insert the word "eighty four" a debate arose upon the motion and Mr Smith of Nobleboro in the course of his remarks alluded to Nathan D Appleton & Obadiah Hill, in a way showing that they were not entitled to protection in debate as Senators - The Speaker interrupted him & stated that he considered those gentlemen as duly elected Senators and entitled to protection in this House as such - Mr Smith of Nobleboro then appealed from the decision of the Speaker - and the Speaker then put the question to the House as follows "Shall the opinion of the Chair stand as the decision of the House" and the question was taken by yeas & nays & decided as follows yeas 62 nays 52 See appendix page 385] The House then adopted the amendments moved by Mr Bourne & passed the Resolve to be engrossed as amended.
