Apr 8th Rec'd news that Lee must surrender and the prospect is good for the war to close soon.
9th News was rec'd that Lee had surrenderd himself and his whole army of north Va and they are to stack their arms and be parolled and return home. Lee requests that there shall be immediate peace without further bloodshed. Colonel Gilmore [Charles D. Gilmore] came to see me in the A.M. and I went to town to see him P.M.
