is with us again.

As I have been assigned by Gen. Griffin to command of the 3d Brigade of the Division, the command of the Regiment will devolve upon Lt. Col. Gilmore or Major Spear, in whose hands its interests, I think, will not suffer.

I regret being thus obliged to leave even temporarily, the noble Regiment with which I have shared so many hardships & perils, & not a few honors too; but I shall have it still under my eye, & in my care, & shall spare no effort to maintain its high & deserved reputation. Any suggestions which in the mean time, I may take the liberty to make, as holding myself responsible for the Regt., will be prompted by a regard solely to its welfare, & the good of the service.

           Very respectfully
                 Your obdt. servant
                       J.L. Chamberlain
                       Colonel. 20th Maine vols.
