A communication was received from the Speaker informing the House that he should not be able to attend in his place today, on account of indisposition - and thereupon the House proceeded by ballot to the choice of a Speaker pro tem. The whole number given in was One hundred & sixteen - necessary to constitute an election fifty nine - Timothy Boutelle had seventy votes and he was declared elected - and being present took the Chair.
Bill - to cede to the United States the jurisdiction of a certain tract of land in the town of Castine, was read a third time & passed to be engrossed. Sent up for concurrence
Resolve relating to fortifications on the Penobscot River was called up, and the amendment moved by Mr Adams of Saturday last rejected. The House then substituted a new draft proposed by Mr Smith of Nobleboro' for the original Resolve, and the new draft was passed to be engrossed - The latter question was taken by yeas & nays & decided as follows. Yeas 91 Nays 26 - [See appendix page 319.]
