My dear Governor
The aforesaid Private Lewis R Haskell was a private in Company "D" 2nd Maine Vols commanded by Captain J.S. Sampson, whose signature is thereto affixed. Haskell is a strong man, very energetic, and a man of integrity of character, was taken prisoner at the Battle of Manassas and if exchanged, we cheerfully and with pleasure recommend L.R. Haskell of Milo a fit man for a Lieut in the volunteers of this state and request your Excellency to appoint him a Lieut in the volunteer Militia of Maine
