we moved to the mouth of the Monocacy, where the brigade encamped.- During the few following days the different regiments of the brigade , were assigned stations as points along the river, ( the object of our presence in Maryland being to guard the fords of the Potomac, ) and our regiment proceeded on Sunday ( 21st ) to its post at Point of Rocks, where we remained till Wednesday Oct 8- the interval being occupied principally with guard duty at the picket posts along the river- A scouting party sent to Waterford Virginia - 8 miles distant - and captured one Sargent of Calvary and three privates.- Oct 1st & 2nd - Wednesday Oct 8th we moved twelve miles down the river to Conrad's Ferry where we joined the rest of the brigade.- Saturday Oct 11th, we received orders in the evening to march to the mouth of the Monocacy, where in company with the Third Maine regiment ( the two regiments being under command of Col. Walker ) we took position to guard the ford against the approach of Stewart's ( Confederate ) Cavalry, who, having made a raid into Pennsylvania and across the rear of McClellan's army, were expected to make an attempt to cross into Virginia at this place. On Sunday morning ( 12th ) Gen. Pleasanton, with a force of calvary and artillery which had been in pursuit of the rebels the previous day and night, joined us at the mouth of the Monocacy with the news that the enemy's
