Dear Sir:–
I am advised that the friends of Col. Chamberlain of the 20th Maine Vols., now commanding the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, have presented his claims to the President for the position of Brigadier General.
My personal knowledge of this gallant officer's skill and bravery upon the battlefield, his ability in drill and discipline, and his fidelity to duty in camp, added to a just admiration for his scholarship, and respect for his Christian character, induces me to ask your influence in his behalf.
