Understanding that Rev'd Mr.[?] Mitchell recently appointed chaplain of the 20th Maine Vols declines the appointment, I respectfully endorse the recommendation by the officers of the Regiment, of Rev. Mr. Godfrey for the position of chaplain of the 20th Regiment Maine Vols.

I trust he will be directed to report without delay.
