The Committee on Engrossed Bills, reported as correctly engrossed, Bill to incorporate the Brunswick Company, and the same was passed to be enacted
Petition of Moses E. Wescott and others to be set off from New Vineyard and annexed to New Portland, was read and referred to the Committee on Division of Towns. Sent up for concurrence.
Bill to annex a part of the town of Hallowell to Gardiner came up from the House with two amendments. The Senate reconsider their vote passing said Bill to be engrossed; and the question of adopting the amendment proposed by the House, marked D. as follows, to wit, "And further provided, That the inhabitants aforesaid, which by the act are set off and annexed to Gardiner, shall be holden to pay to the town of Hallowell, within two years, their just proportion of all debts, not exceeding Five Thousand Dollars, now due from said Hallowell to any person or persons whomsoever; and said proportion shall be ascertained by a reference to the last assessment of state, County and Town taxes made upon the polls and estates, taxable at that time, in said town", being ordered to be taken by yeas and nays was decided in the negative as follows, to wit. Yeas, Messrs. Chandler, Emmons, Farnham, Groton, Prescott, Rogers and Tobin - 7. Nays, Messrs. Allen, Bradbury, Bridgham, Brown Farnsworth, Frye, Howard, Kelsey, Knowlton, Labaree, Manning, Pease, Pierce, Porter, Smith & Williamson 16. The Senate adopt the first amendment, marked A, and pass the same to be engrossed as thus amended.
