We went on Post this morning and it is a bad staring day it rained and snowed all last night. our Company is divided up into 4 reliefs. I am on the 2nd relief. each relief has to stand 2 hours at a time and off six hours.

It was a pretty call night to stand guard. I had to go on post at 9 oclock and stand till 11. and on again at 4 and stand till 6 oclock. To day the time passed off quick for we had something to interest us we could talk with the rebels a cross the river

Last night the weather was quit pleasant[?] to stand guard. and to day has warm. the Rebels send us over several little boats to day with tabacco and news papers on them we sent back some papers to them, but it is strictly aganst orders to hold any conversation with them but the men will do it.

We was relived to day at 2 oclock by the 1st Maryland Cavalry. and came into Camp. we got to Camp at 5 oclock I was glad to get to camp received a letter from home to night.

In the afternoon we had to go out with the rest of the Brigade and avitiers[?] the punishment of to men for deserting. they was sentenced by a Court Martil to have one half of their heads shaved. and to be branded with the letter D
