16th I started for Washington at seven o'clock in the morning on board of the steamboat. We were 3/4 of an hour on the way to the city. I started for Fort Sumner and got thair at noon. Found the boys all well in the 1st Me heavy artillery which was the 18th Maine infantry when they left the state.

18th We went down to Washington. It rained all of the forenoon. We went into the capital and into the Smithsonian institute. I had a good time. Got back to camp near sunset. I saw Dr Elkins that is set to practice at Ashland. I got a fiddlestring for a frenchman and he plaid all of the evening and we had a good time.
