Mr. Fall: We are very sorry that Mr. Chase is not here; he was ill yesterday and went to a physician in the morning to get some medicine and should not have come here. He is very anxious to come and finish his testimony, and we shall have to ask your indulgence until he is able to come out. Testimony of Henry M. Harlow. By Mr: Fall. Ques. How long have you been superintendent of the Asylum. Ans. I was elected in 1852. Ques. Your age. Ans. 59. Ques. How long have you been in the profession of medicine. Ans. Since 1844. Ques. Give the committee a little idea of the duties of a superintendent of a hospital about how much time is spent in it. Ans. That depends a good deal upon how much he has to do. In this institution the superintendent can spend more time with the patients than in some hospitals where he has all the work to do, that is where he has the stewards and the treasurers work as it is
