State of maine.
To Josiah W. Seaver, Esquire Sheriff of our County of York, or either of his Deputies or either of the coroners for the County of Cumberland. Greeting:

Whereas His Excellency William P. Giles, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath represented that a certain Captain John P. Emery, who is supposed to be residing in the town of Biddeford, in the said State of Maine, being charged with the crime of Felony, in carrying away from Fredericksburg in said Commonwealth a Fugitive from Justice. And whereas a copy of the complaint made by the said Benjamin Alsop, charging under oath the said John P. Emery with the crime aforesaid, and sundry Depositions in proof of the fact, are produced, and the said William B. Giles, Governor as aforesaid, having agreeably to the Constitution and a Law of the United States, demanded the said John P. Emery, a fugitive from Justice, as aforesaid, and as it is said, now in the County of York, be delivered to Boswell Alsop, Esquire, appointed by the Governor of said Commonwealth, Agent to receive the said fugitive that he may be transported to that Commonwealth and dealt with according to Law.
Now therefore, I Nathan Cutler, President of the Senate and exercising the office of Governor of the State of Maine, by virtue of the Constitution of the United States, and a law of the same, as well as a law of this State, do require and Command you, to arrest and secure the said John P. Emery, and having so arrested and secured from, to notify the said Boswell Alsop, the Agent appointed to receive the said Fugitive, and to deliver or cause to be delivered the said Emery, to the said Boswell Alsop, when he shall appear, in order that he may be transported to the Commonwealth aforesaid, to be dealt with according to Law; the costs of apprehending and securing said Emery to be paid by the Agent aforesaid.
Hereof fail not, and make due return of this writ with your doings therein into our Secretary of States Office, immediately after you shall have executed the same. Witness Nathan Cutler, Esquire, President of our Senate, and exercising the Office of Governor, this twenty first of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine, and in the fifty fourth year of the Independence of the United States of America.
