[To the left is “Samuel E. Smith”, no seal]
Whereas his Excellency Levi Lincoln Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts hath represented that John Getchell, comorant [commorant] at Waterville, County of Kennebec, State of Maine charged with the crime of forgery, is a fugitive from Justice, having fled to the State of Maine and is now commorant at said Waterville, And whereas a copy of the complaint made by Joseph S. Seavill charging under oath, the said Getchell with the crime aforesaid is produced, and the said Levi Lincoln, Governor as aforesaid having agreeably to the Constitution, and a law of the United States, demanded that the said John Getchell, a fugitive as aforesaid be arrested and delivered to Stephen Upton, appointed by the Governor of said Commonwealth, Agent, to receive the said fugitive, that he may be transported to that Commonwealth and dealt with according to law.
Now therefore I Samuel E. smith Governor of the State of Maine by virtue of the Constitution of the United States, and a law of the same, as well as a law of this State, do require and command all and every of the officers of this State, especially the Sheriff of the County of Kennebec to arrest and deliver the said John Getchell, being a fugitive from justice as aforesaid, to the said Stephen Upton Agent as aforesaid for this purpose specially appointed, unless the said John Getchell be holden by such officer to answer for a violation of the laws of this State. And the said Upton is hereby authorized to transport the said John Getchell to the line of the State of Maine on the way to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, at the proper expense and charge of the said Agent. And all civil officers within this State are hereby commanded to afford the said Stephen Upton all needful assistance in transporting the said John Getchell to the line of the State in execution of this warrant.
In testimony whereof I have caused the Seal of this State to be hereunto affixed, this third day of April, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty one, and in the fifty fifth year of the Independence of the United States.
By the Governor.
