Keene enlisted in the U.S. service three months ago, he is not yet eighteen years of age, and it was with great hesitancy that I consented to his earnest appeal to go and fight for the good of the people. He is in the 2d Maine Regiment Co. E. I gave him a writ thinking it was only for three months as in fact it was but the time has been changed since. Now this boy is my only dependence.
