I saw Sidney and Orren Baskell and they said Prentis was in the front. The Com'y has been fighting at Middlebury and lost heavy. Tim Dean was wounded.

20th  Saturday. A rainy morning. We lay in camp all day. I went to see the Com'y boys. that regt was on picket in front.

21st  Our Colonel is off duty and we dread to go into action without him. Colonel Cannes of the other regt was sent to command ours and the boys have grate[sic] confidense[sic] in him and feel joyous over the matter. We marched for Middlebury and went out on the left of town. I saw the 1st Me Cav'y. We then marched in line of battle and went into the woods for a short distance. Then the battery opened and we took the field and advanced for about a mile and a half and the rebs shelled us. We had one man killed and six wounded. Our skirmishers took some prisoners. Lieut. Marrill of Co B recognised[sic] a reb Lieut amongst them that he had worked with on Penobscot river and talked with him.
