the Governor & Council of the State of Maine

Agreeable with the “Resolve in favor of the Passamaquoddy Indians” passed in the Legislature in March 1860 with accompanying instructions; acting for the Sup. School Committee of Princeton, I hereby respectfully – Report –

I have attended to that duty and herewith enclose the teacher’s bill for services, his register, also the account of disbursement of school fund, showing a balance against the State of $6.80.

I was not informed that the appropriation was any less this year than last, until nearby the close of the school and when notified, I paid over $10 – to the Sup. School Committee of the town of Perry.

In my opinion there has been a perceptible advance in the scholars of this school showing a knowledge of the fundamental rules of Arithmetic, they now read with tolerable fluency in plain and easy reading: but their greatest proficiency appears in their penmanship some specimens of which you will find enclosed – they were written in the presence of and at the request of the committee quite readily, with but very little instruction as to the form, by the teacher

There is evidently more interest among the parents of the children, as the average attendance is better this year than heretofore.

I am glad to report that the State through the Indian Agent, has erected a small school House, and hope there may be an additional appropriation to finish said building.

Feeling assured that good is being accomplished by this aid to these Indians, I would again recommend another year’s appropriation, for the schooling of the Children of this people –
