Colonel Cannes of the other regt was sent to command ours and the boys have grate confidense in him and feel joyous over the matter. We marched for Middlebury and went out on the left of town. I saw the 1st Me Cav'y. We then marched in line of battle and went into the woods for a short distance. Then the battery opened and we took the field and advanced for about a mile and a half and the rebs shelled us. We had one man killed and six wounded. Our skirmishers took some prisoners.
