212 we must dwell with interest upon that enlightened policy, which contributed to our separation from the parent state, and when we recur to the interesting scenes of Legislative duty, we shall delight with such recollections the friends who devised and matured those measures, which so happily resulted in the Independence of Maine. Gentlemen, the curtain of separation is drawing around us, and we are about to bid adieu to each other to mingle once more with our fellow citizens, over whom we have been called to exercise authority. At this moment I am prompted by inclination as well as duty to tender you the assurances of my personal regard with my best wishes for your individual prosperity - may you return to your families and friends in safety, again to find happiness in the endearments of home, and when you shall approach the close of a well spent life, supported by the testimony of an approving conscience, may you be conducted in safety through the dark valley and enter upon the enjoyments of that state, whose happiness is perfect. Gentlemen, I bid you an affectionate farewell.
