One day we desided to go on a recanisence a couple of miels back from the river to see what we could discover. We at last came threw a piece of woods in sight of a fine farmhouse and determined to see if there was any men about it.

We deployed as scirmishers and moved around the edge of the woods and then advanced on the buildings. In due time so wer discovered and a man rushed from the house, evidently to reach the woods undiscovered, but our boys being between him and the woods, he saw them and stoped and appea-red altogether unconsinerd. We went up to the house in company with him and had quite a long talk with him. We had orders to arrest all suspicious persons and turn them over to the gun-boats, but while talking with him, it was discovered that he belonged to the masonic order, and our commanding Sargent Stone of Co J was also a mason, and let him go fee by good premisses. His name was Grimes, and owned that he had arms in the house
