On motion of Mr Kent Ordered, that the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the expediency of authorizing towns, whenever any town shall by vote so determine, to appoint Commissioners of Highways, with powers similar to those granted to the town of Portland, instead of Highway Surveyors as now by law established - sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr Washburn Ordered, That the Joint Standing Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the expediency of amending or repealing An Act entitled An Act for restraining the taking of excessive usury with leave to report by Bill or otherwise - sent up for concurrence -

Ordered that the Committee on Finance to which is referred the petition of James Rangely be instructed in apportioning the State tax, to assess Township numbered three in the second Range of township between Binghams Kennebec purchase and the line of New Hampshire in the County of Oxford in separate parcels to wit, upon the easterly part of said Township, being a strip of three hundred rods in width extending from the south to the north line of said township supposed to belong to Caleb A. Townsend of New York as one parcel and the residue of said Township, supposed belong to said Rangeley as the other parcel, and to apportion the tax on the whole upon the respective parcels, as to said Committee shall seem just and equitable -

Ordered that the Committee on Finance be instructed to consider the expediency of appropriating out of the money heretofore received, or hereafter to to be received for the Massachusetts Claim
